#BLOGREVIEW ( ecrivaine - February 16, 2022 )
“From the opening notes of "Ain't Enough", the mood is languid, reflective. Robert's is a lived-in voice, calling to be taken home, but no longer sure where home is, where home was, or what home might be.

The guitar tones step up to electrified dissent on "Going Away to Leave You". This is blues wrung from tortured daily experience. And so it goes. The tracks in the core of the album, from "I Get By" on, have a similar feel. Exquisitely dirty guitar, exquisitely dirty voice. It would get you down if that wasn't why you came here.

The whole album sounds as if it's about pain. Not the pain of extraordinary events, but the pain of a life lived under the hammer, on the anvil, being tested and tempered. The instrumentation rarely rises above six strings. The voice ranges between despair and anger, with an occasional side trip to check out disdain.

But take a listen to "Truck Stop Girl", the vocal a drunken slur, the guitar bobbing along in the wake of a bittersweet ennui. And the backbeat and vocal rhythms on "Where I Went Wrong" calling out for a drummer's caress.

Personal favourite? "Life is Good". Irony taken so far it becomes pathos.

But what a voice. The album exhausts me ... unexpectedly, in a good way.

When it comes around again at the end of the album, reprise the title track and let the pedal steel work its magic. There is solace. There can be balm. But it ain't enough.“

Robert Connely Farr, an acoustic guitar & a collection of songs that is dear to his heart. Recorded in Vancouver BC - at Hipposonic Studios - the old Little Mountain Sound Studio - where some of rocks best records were made by bands like Aerosmith, Bon Jovi & AC/DC.

--------------------------------------------------

Robert Connely Farr is a songwriter from Bolton, Mississippi (Charley Patton / Mississippi Sheiks) currently residing in Vancouver, BC. Since 2017, Mississippi bluesman Jimmy “Duck” Holmes has been mentoring Farr in the Bentonia Blues, an obscure style that Holmes learned directly from Henry Stuckey, who also taught Skip James.

Robert released Dirty South Blues in late 2018 to immediate critical acclaim. In 2019, Farr played the Bentonia Blues Festival and was nominated for Songwriter of the Year & New Artist of the Year by the prestigious Canadian Maple Blues Awards - this followed by a cancer diagnosis and emergency surgery.

Farr hit the ground running in 2020, releasing 3 albums (Gasoline, Live In EastVan & Country Supper) culminating into Farr's 16 track Country Supper - which landed on numerous 'Best of Year' lists and in similar fashion to Dirty South Blues, garnered dozens of positive reviews from critics.

"Ain't Enough is a collection of songs that emerged after the release of Country Supper - some songs that I've had for awhile & some that just bubbled right up & I had some incredible experiences writing them. Songs can be very healing that way."
