about

Robert here - a few years ago I was up in Vancouver BC when I got a call from my brother telling me to get home asap, my dad had an inoperable tumor behind his heart. I spent a few weeks home with my father & one of those days we took a father son road trip from our home in Edwards, Mississippi west to Vicksburg and then up into the delta, through fields of corn, cotton & rednecks. We ended up in Clarksdale, had some ribs & catfish and from there, I suggested we head across 82 then back down 49 through Yazoo City and on to Edwards from Flora. As we were passing Bentonia, I suggested we go see this little building I had been taking pictures of for years - a little blue and white juke joint (with a big coca cola sign*) called the Blue Front Cafe. We pulled up in front of the old building, next to a cotton gin, across the street from the railroad tracks and pretty much in the shadows of the town's witch-hat water tower and I seen the front door open, so we step inside, a conversation ensued & then Jimmy "Duck" Holmes played the most haunting rendition of "Devil Got My Woman" that I had ever heard. My hair stood on end. It was just me and my dad in there. Later, at home that night in the dead silence of our living room, my dad looked at me and said "something happened in there today didn't it?" Yeah dad, it sure did.

Jimmy has been teaching me for a few years now, not just music, but about life in general. But with regards to music, one of the things Jimmy constantly preaches is the immediacy of the song - how it doesn't have to be known so much as it has to be felt. Through these years our music and style of playing has transformed dramatically. It's shifted band members, band set up, how we write & how we record - with all of it becoming increasingly more minimal.

"Gasoline" is a collection of b-sides & rarities that is a kind of record of what I'm talking about here. A snapshot of a process maybe? An exploration? Isn't that what all of this is anyway?

Stay safe friends!

PS - we have a new album coming out in a few months!
